Hiroshi Ohashi : In the World of Sculpture

Sep 14 2024 - Oct 5 2024

Reception and Artist Talk : Sep 21 (Sat) 4-6 pm

Curation Note

Alpha Contemporary is proud to present 「Hiroshi Ohashi : In the World of Sculpture」from September 14th to October 5th, 2024.

This exhibition is Hiroshi Ohashi's (Japanese b.1967) solo exhibition in Japan for the first time in nine years.

The exhibition focuses on the exhibition itself, which has been carried by post-modern sculpture. It is also an attempt to objectify the issue of how to take emotional distance from figurative sculpture. Western modern sculpture, which began with Auguste Rodin (France, 1840 – 1917), expressed human beings as they are in a realistic manner, compared to conventional sculpture that expressed objects in ideal shapes and proportions with motifs such as mythology. At the same time, sculpture, which had previously been an accessory to architecture, developed as an independent genre.

Looking back at art history since ancient times, it is no exaggeration to say that sculpture was devoted to one theme: the human body. In order to more clearly experience the essence of 『Three-dimensional sculpture』, Ohashi organizes the exhibition using 『Head』 as its symbolic form.

The wooden sculpture "Funyako" has a large head. The rest of the body appears to be attached to the head without a proper torso, as can be seen from the name "Funyako". This is a visual representation of Ohashi's image of the modern human body. The head alone is placed at the edge of a long display stand, and "Funyako" is displayed hanging from the stand. Ohashi's message is humorously developed throughout the exhibition.『頭芸』Tougei, the ceramic artwork, is not placed perpendicular to the table, but rather offset from it. The work expands its sphere of influence by changing not only the flow of air surrounding it, but also the space in which it is placed.

In the exhibition, Ohashi explores sculpture, a three-dimensional form, by experiencing the relationship between the work and the space in which it is placed.

We hope that you can experience the possibilities of post-modern sculpture presented by Ohashi through this exhibition.
